Year 5

Welcome

In Year 5, at Bank End Primary School, we are committed to bringing out the best in everyone. Children will learn from a creative, relevant curriculum that will equip them with the resilience and stamina needed to achieve academic excellence in preparation for Year 6 and beyond.

Using prior learning to extend our children’s skill sets, we will embark on a wide range of educational experiences that will develop their knowledge of our locality of Barnsley and then extend out to the wider world. Expanding on the theme of locality, in geography we will explore rivers in our surrounding and how they have impacted and shaped Barnsley. Wherever possible, visits will be planned and influential people will be invited in to school to enhance their learning experience.

The children will be encouraged to:

  • Develop resilience and to believe that no task is too unattainable.
  • Understand that mistakes are essential to moving their learning forward.
  • Develop a sense of social awareness: knowing people are different and respecting these differences. Everyone is unique and achievements are individual.
  • Explain their thought processes.
  • Make the most of every learning experience provided and become confident to apply their skills in a range of different situations.
Intent

To help ensure that each of our pupils has a well-rounded and rich learning experience, teachers will plan lessons that inspire and challenge their thinking. Through delivery of lessons that use high-quality resources, each child will be given the opportunity to fulfil their potential and thrive in a welcoming and safe learning environment.

During their time in Year 5, pupils will be given the opportunity to:

  • experience an extra-curricular club which promotes and develops their personal interests and talents
  • represent themselves and our school at a sporting, cultural or academic event
  • take part in an end of year performance, showcasing their own unique talents
  • attend enrichment visits to complement the curriculum
  • meet someone inspirational who provides a wider outlook on future possibilities
  • learn about and explore our local community and what makes our area special
  • share and take pride in their own work and to encourage, and be encouraged by, others, across all subjects

Supporting your child to read

At Bank End we ask that every child reads at home for a minimum of 10 minute everyday and brings their reading book back into school daily. This serve as the core of children's home learning as reading is the key to success in all areas of the curriculum.
