Year 2

Welcome

In Year 2 we provide opportunities for your child to deepen, strengthen and build on their prior knowledge. We endeavour to do this by considering your child’s own individual interests and prior learning when planning our engaging curriculum.  At Bank End Primary Academy, we value our families and wider community; together we nurture our children to not only fulfil their true potential, but to become responsible, respectful, and resilient citizens of the future. In Year 2 we celebrate each child’s individual uniqueness and recognise the different learning styles, skills, and abilities that each child has. Our curriculum ensures that all pupils can see themselves reflected positively and that they are encouraged to see beyond their own lived experiences. We work closely with parents to help children reach their potential throughout the year, teaching them skills, concepts and values which will serve them well in their future life.

We want to ensure that our children feel part of our school community and our wider community. In school we promote a Conscious Discipline approach to promote positive attitudes to learning, which reflects the values and skills needed to promote responsibility for learning and future life-long success.

Intent

Our approach to Year 2 intends to develop character and awareness as a citizen of our local and wider community embodying British Values. We deliver an education with character through a well-rounded curriculum.

Children are provided with the opportunity to read to an adult in school. Adults also read stories to the children each day to promote a love for reading and reading for pleasure. High quality literacy lessons are taught daily using a variety of quality texts which are often linked to our class topics. Reading is also heavily embedded into our literacy curriculum by following the teaching sequence of gather, skills, apply.

Daily maths lessons are completed which provide all our children with the opportunity to explore and discuss mathematical concepts. Concrete resources are always available to support our pupils' understanding.

Our carefully selected topics follow the interests of the children and aim to motivate and inspire them.

Year 2 pupils will have the opportunity to:

  • experience an extra-curricular club which promotes and develops their personal interests and talents.

  • perform on stage at a Christmas or Summer Time event.

  • read a range of texts from over 20 different authors.

  • plant a seed and watch it grow.

  • learn about our local history and how our local area has developed and changed over time.

  • become an artist by creating their own collage linked to The Great Fire of London.

  • represent themselves, and our school, at a sporting or academic event.

Supporting your child to read

At Bank End we ask that every child reads at home for a minimum of 10 minute everyday and brings their reading book back into school daily. This serve as the core of children's home learning as reading is the key to success in all areas of the curriculum.
