Y5 visit to Barnsley Academy for science lesson

This week, the children learned about parachutes as part of their Forces study. After finding out about how parachutes slow down someone falling, they learned that a parachute can reduce the force of gravity by creating more air resistance. The children then had to make their own parachutes from carrier bags, string and a weighted lump of plasticine which was the 'man' hanging from the bottom. Launching these parachutes was done from the main walkway to the front of the building and each throw was measured in the time it took to reach the ground.
