The Aliens have Landed!

This week in year 1 was all about the aliens! The children enjoyed reading ‘Alien’s Love Underpants’ and other fun books in this series. We were inspired through this to design our own aliens and use our phonics to create funny Alien names for them. The children have improved their blending skills to read words and enjoyed playing alien snap and pairs games to practise this.

Antarctic Expeditions!

This week the children in year 1 found out more about the Arctic climates and lands by looking at a previous expedition taken by Prince Harry. We enjoyed finding out where he went and what he had to do in such a challenging climate. We looked at some real snow equipment such as snow boats, coats and goggles and used this to inspire us to go on our own arctic exploration. We thought about what animals we would spot there and had a go at building our own small scale igloos.

We are Explorers!

This week in year 1 we received a special letter from Miki. A little girl who lives in an Icy land. We read a story book all about Miki and looked at photographs she sent us of where she lives. This inspired us to make our own stories set in cold and Icey settings. The children have also used our Travel Agents Role Play area to think about other countries in the world and what the weather is like there. We also met Barnaby Bear who is always exploring the world and compared his holiday with where Miki lives. We have loved finding out about different countries in our amazing world and can’t wait to find out more next week!

Magical Worlds!

This week in Literacy the children have been busy creating their own stories set in magical lands. We used ‘The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe’ as inspiration for planning a story where our main character was transported to another world by entering a magical object. Just like Lucy and the Wardrobe! This week the children have used pictures to plan the key events in their stories and worked together using Talk for Writing to really get to grips with the story language they will use in their writing. We can’t wait to carry on with this next week and start seeing our stories come to life.

Happy New Year

What a happy start to the new year the children in year 1 have had. We were so happy to be back in school and seeing each other again this week. The children started the week making a New Year promise to always be kind. We read a story about ‘Bucket Fillers’ and learned about how we can all keep each others’ invisible buckets full by being kind to one another. The children enjoyed decorating their own buckets and have been filling them with stars since every time they show kindness. We have had so many kind acts this week and are feeling very proud of our team for this. Also, on Monday the class had a very exciting arrival in the post. ‘Pip’ the penguin arrived with a note asking if we could take care of him. Of course we jumped at the chance to look after Pip and have enjoyed finding out about Penguins and where they live.

Happy New Year
