World Book Day

Gary Child 0 348

The children in Year 1 were so happy to finally celebrate World Book Day on Tuesday after being snowed off last week! Every child went to an amazing effort and looked wonderful in their costumes. There were some brilliant choices and it was interesting to learn about the traditional characters children chose to dress up as.  During day the children immersed themselves fully in Traditional Stories and Fairy Tales and enjoyed working in teams to explore different stories. We read to each other, re-told stories out loud and worked as a team to make story maps. The children also used their data handling skills they have learned this week to find out which books, stories or characters the children in the class liked the best.

Back with a Bang!

Year 1 have had a brilliant and busy first week back to school after the half term holiday. We really enjoyed learning about Chinese New Year and building up our knowledge of China and the things that happen at this time of year. The children had a go at making their own Chinese decorations and dragons and enjoyed drawing some Chinese symbols. In Literacy the children have also been taking a dive under the sea! We have enjoyed stories in under sea settings and learning about The Angler Fish as part of a very exciting task sent to us from Disney! The children are helping researchers find out about this interesting sea creature and are working towards putting together a very important report.

The Aliens have Landed!

This week in year 1 was all about the aliens! The children enjoyed reading ‘Alien’s Love Underpants’ and other fun books in this series. We were inspired through this to design our own aliens and use our phonics to create funny Alien names for them. The children have improved their blending skills to read words and enjoyed playing alien snap and pairs games to practise this.

Antarctic Expeditions!

Gary Child 0 469

This week the children in year 1 found out more about the Arctic climates and lands by looking at a previous expedition taken by Prince Harry. We enjoyed finding out where he went and what he had to do in such a challenging climate. We looked at some real snow equipment such as snow boats, coats and goggles and used this to inspire us to go on our own arctic exploration. We thought about what animals we would spot there and had a go at building our own small scale igloos.

We are Explorers!

This week in year 1 we received a special letter from Miki. A little girl who lives in an Icy land. We read a story book all about Miki and looked at photographs she sent us of where she lives. This inspired us to make our own stories set in cold and Icey settings. The children have also used our Travel Agents Role Play area to think about other countries in the world and what the weather is like there. We also met Barnaby Bear who is always exploring the world and compared his holiday with where Miki lives. We have loved finding out about different countries in our amazing world and can’t wait to find out more next week!
