Year 1 Learning about plants continued

Dawn Bullen 0 252

This week year one have continued to learn all about plants in their Science curriculum. The children focused on all the different things plants need to live. The children enjoyed carrying out an investigation to find out what plants need and the importance of each element. The investigation required the children to work in groups to remove one thing a plant needs and see what the effect is. The children will be checking their investigations over the next week to find out the results.

Year 1 Learning about Plants

This week the children in Year one have enjoyed being taught about plants in Science by our Leeds Beckett University student teachers. We have learned different part of plants and what those different parts do. We had lots of fun planting our own plants too! We planted some cress seeds in some kitchen role and we have been keeping a close eye on how they are growing. We can’t wait to see how they have changed next week. On Friday we also had an exciting day in school. With the Tour de Yorkshire coming through Barnsley we spent some time finding out about the race and what happens. We loved learning about the race and developing our knowledge of such a big event that was happening in our town.

Shapes and Patterns

This week the children in Year 1 have been learning about William Morris. A Victorian artist who was one of the first people to design patterned wallpaper for people’s homes. After looking at some of his artwork the children have explored lots of different ways to make patterns using shapes and colours. The children even had a go at designing their own wallpaper designs using their own ideas. As well as a busy week for learning the children have also had a really positive week for celebrations and rewards. Last week we had the highest attendance in Transition Phase and enjoyed an extra playtime on the banking and climbing frame. We also filled our class ant hill. Over time the children collect leaves for the ant hill by working well together as a team and trying their best. Once all the leaves have been collected in the ant hill the children are rewarded with a treat they chose at the beginning of the year. This week it was a party! The next reward we are working towards is a pic nic and we already have started collecting leaves for this. I’m sure the children will have earned it before they know it!

School Days

The children in year 1 returned to school this week to a brand new topic ‘School Days’. Through this topic children will be thinking about school days in the past and comparing them to what life is like in school for children now. We will be particularly focusing on the Victorian Period and learning about the day to day life of a Victorian Child. To help children understand this they spent our first day back stepping back in time and having a Victorian Day. The children went to a fantastic effort in dressing in costume and experienced different lesson in the style of a Victorian Classroom. The children had to use chalk and chalk boards instead of paper and had to sit silently in rows. We also banished electronics and played some traditional Victorian Games. The children enjoyed traditional toys such as card games and wooden trains and made their own peg dolls and figures. The children loved the experience but agreed they would definitely have not liked to have gone to school in Victorian Times!
