This week the children in year 1 have been recapping and extending their knowledge and understanding of shape. The children have been exploring both 2D and 3D shapes and working hard to remember their names. The children have been making patterns, models and pictures with shapes and describing their properties. The children have also learned what it means to halve shapes and amounts and used practical resources to practise this. We are shape superstars!

The children were confident and remembered all the sounds they have been learning to read lots of different words. The children enjoyed working with each other to practise their reading this week with a variety of activities. Well Done Year 1 – we are so proud!

This week the children in year 1 have been learning the traditional tale Rapunzel as part of their Literacy learning. This is the start of an exciting unit called ‘Twisted Tales’ where children will learn how to re-write a traditional tale from another characters point of view. This week the children have been using lots of different ways and skills to get to know the story well and write it from memory. There has been some fantastic group work going on with children working in small groups to order the events and make story maps to help them re-tell it to others.

Learning in Literacy and Maths

The children in year 1 have had yet another busy week of learning. In Literacy the children have enjoyed finding out about the very exciting Royal Wedding on Saturday. The children watched video clips and looked at photographs in groups to gather as many facts about the day as they could. The children have used these to write about the Royal Wedding and make comparisons with Queen Victoria’s Wedding  which we learned about last week. In maths the children have been starting to develop their place value knowledge and thinking about how to partition numbers from 10 – 20 into tens and ones. The children have loved seeing their number knowledge grow through this and seeing how quickly they can solve calculations using these new number facts.

Learning about Royal Weddings

This week the children in year 1 have been learning all about Royal Weddings in anticipation of Prince Harry’s wedding on Saturday. As part of our history topic the children have found out about Queen Victoria’s wedding and comparing this with modern day royal weddings. The children worked in groups to find out and record facts about Royal Weddings both now and in the past. The children found out some great facts and are using these to complete some fantastic recounts about Royal weddings in their writing this week. At the end of the week we enjoyed a really exciting curriculum day linked to our Victorian topic. We were visited by a Victorian character from the past and found out all about life for children in Victorian times. The children were brilliant sports and all enjoyed being involved.
