Y6 Autumn Term 2011

Our class topic this term (‘Is it right to fight?’) will be focusing on the lives of British children in and around World War Two (1939 to 1945).  The class reading book will be ‘Good night Mister Tom’ by Michelle Magorian, describing the life of the evacuee Willie Beech.

As members of a community we will empathise with the children that were evacuated, like Willie Beech, into families in different communities, looking at how their lives were changed.

Through the History of World War Two, we will look at sub-topics such as:

  • The Blitz – when and what it meant for children in the cities;
  • Evacuation – the lives of children that were evacuated and why they went;
  • Rationing – what foods were available/unavailable;
  • The Home Front – what life was like at home for the average family in 1939 – 1945;
  • Tools of war – warplanes, tanks, soldiers, weapons, battles!

As Writers, we can use World War Two as a stimulus to keep diaries, write recounts of evacuees’ lives, reports of events of the war, instructions on how to make items, etc.

As Artists, we will use charcoal and pastels to recreate atmospheric scenes from the Blitz in cities around Britain.

As Geographers, we will study which countries were involved in WW2 (both the Allies and the enemy) and why war came about.

In Design and Technology, we will use our expertise from last year’s ‘hats’ work to create our own wartime gasmasks and war helmets.

Our Science topic this half term is ‘Micro-organisms’ where will be looking at how germs and bacteria can cause disease, as well as how they can be useful in food production.

Y1 topic – Dungeons and Dragons

Our exciting new topic this term is Dungeons and Dragons. We will be learning all about dragons, castles, knights and fairytales and that’s just a taste of the fun that we are going to have.

As Historians we will be studying castles and finding out who lived in them and how long ago. We will also be finding out what living in a castle was like.

We will be using our skills in Geography to research castles that are near to where we live. We will be finding out what they look like, where they are and when they were built.

We will also be creating lots of fantastic art work that will be inspired by our theme. This will include using different techniques and materials to bring our imagination to life through our pictures and designs.

If you thought our term seemed packed with brilliant activities already, wait until you hear about what we will be making in Design and Technology.  We will be designing and making shields that will feature our very own coat of arms. We will also be making a ‘How to Catch a Dragon Kit’. This will test our problem solving skills, as we will have to consider what is needed to catch such a rare creature.

In Science we will be learning about ‘Movement, Pushes and Pulls’. This will allow us to explore how different objects move and how we can influence this through pushing and pulling. This topic will provide opportunities for us to measure and record as we investigate and predict.
