Crucial Crew 2008

ImageThe Interchange - Safety on the buses

We went into a bus and watched a DVD. The DVD was all about behaving on a bus, getting a bus pass, no smoking and respecting the conductor and the driver. It told us that when you are on a bus its best to sit down and be quiet. You could talk amongst yourselves but you had to do it quietly. It also told us if you had a bus pass you could get on the bus for forty pence instead of a full fair of one pound twenty. The cartoon Mark told us that you should always say thank you to the driver or the conductor because it makes his job seem a little less harder when you say thank you. The behaviour on the bus is important. It is agents the law to smoke on a public transport. If you do smoke you will be fined and get a criminal record. Then Mark told us to wait for the bus to drive away before you cross the road.

ImageAt the Bus Stop - personal safety

P.C Taylor picked two people to stand at the bus stop it was Chloe and Alicia. P.C Taylor also gave Alicia a phone.

Then two boys came along pretending to be drunk with cans in their hands. The two boys asked Alicia and Chloe if they wanted a drink of there beer. After that another boy came along and said he needed a phone to phone his mum and he had a knife in his pocket.

Alicia gave him the phone because she was feeling scared. Then they ran off with Alicia’s phone. P.C Taylor asked us what the safest place to go to was and we answered the safest place is shop or the pub. Also he asked us how we felt. We said we were really scared and petrified.

ImageThe Garden

We followed some lads. They picked four children. Charlotte, Natalie, Elle and Bethany. We sat down like they said. One boy picked Janice to light a fire in a wheelie bin.

He got us all to gather round the bin an set it alight. They ran off and left us with a woman shouting at us. She was in uniform. It wasn’t the boys’ house at all it was her hous and she was furious.

Luckily it was just role play. She worked for the Fire Brigade. We went inside and sat down on the floor. (The teachers sat on the comfortable sofa!)

We watched a short film showing us an incident in which teenagers set fire to a wheelie bin and put it outside someone’s front door.

It only took seventeen minutes for a fire to melt down a normal door and be burning through the house.

ImageIn the Park

In the park there was a girl sat on the swings and was up set. She had run away from home. There were two girls on a bench. The girls on the bench came over to the girl on the swing and started to pick on her. The two girls asked to see if the girl on the swing wanted a drink of beer. In the end they were nasty to her and went away.

After the girls left a woman came up to her and asked her what her name was and if would go home with her. Then the girl realised that she did not no the woman and she was in danger so she ran away.

Later the girl was looking through some trash when she found a card. She looked at it and it had a number on it and a name of the a charity that helped runaway children. The number was 0800 335SAFEand the name of the charity was safe@last .She went to the phone box and called the number and they had a little chat with her. She told them where she was and they sent someone round to collect her.

Peter Pan

ImageM&M productions came to Bank End Primary School to perform their production of Peter Pan.

The children enjoyed it very much.

I particularly liked Captain Hook. He was hilarious. Some of the jokes he came out with were really funny. I felt sorry for Mr Child; Captain Hook wouldn’t leave him alone and kept picking on him.

I thought that the girl that played Peter Pan was an excellent singer and the dog, Nanna, was a talented dancer. Wendy’s dad was very strict and needed to give her a break and let her live her own life. The person that played Captain Hooks assistant pirate, Smee, was a great actor.

The finale was a really good choice because everybody was singing along. Miss Tapp was waving her arms to the music.

We all agreed that if they came back to do another production we would really look forward to it. I hope the next production they do at our school is my favourite pantomime - Sleeping Beauty,

Y6 Visit the Royal Spice

Visit to the Royal spice

As we came off the bus we were greeted by Zaff the owner of Royal spice. He told us what we would be doing when we were ready to go inside. When we went inside Zaff took Natalie and Jay to try on some clothes.

The clothes that Natalie and Jay tried on were different to the style of clothes that we would wear. When they both sat down Lee told us all about the clothes and how they belonged to a different religion. He told us why they covered their heads and why their clothes were baggy.

After talking about different religions Lee started to talk about spices. There were two plates on each table each plate had different spices on it. The first plate had three different seeds, three different powders and some cinnamon. On the other plate there was some garlic and ginger. Lee told us to smell every thing on the plates some smelt strange and some smelt nice, like cinnamon and garlic. The spices we talked for a bit about chillis. He told us red chillis were ripe and green chillis were raw. Then Zaff told us we of us could go into the kitchen and one of us from each of the groups could make naan bread.

While one group went into the kitchen, the other group tasted the food. The foods that we tasted were called rice, chicken korma, Bhuna and naan bread. When you finished your food you could grind some poppy seeds in a mortar. We ground them until they turned into powder. Soon it was time for the other group to go into the kitchen. I was chosen to make naan bread. Imran the chief gave me a hat and a apron to put on. Imran showed me how to make the naan bread dough. I copied what Imran did and when I had finished Imran put the dough into a Tandoor. The Tandoor was a large black circular tub heated by gas. The dough was stuck on to the side inside the Tandoor. The fire in the Tandoor just reached the middle of the naan bread dough. After this Imran showed everyone how he would cook food every night. He showed us all the ingredients that he would use every night in the kitchen. He told us the main powder he used was the Methi one that is put in all curries. He also told us chicken korma was one of the most ordered food by the customers.

When we went back into the room every one was sat eating their last of their food. Soon everyone finished and settled down and Lee showed as all around the dining room. The room had a beautiful water feature in the corner. When we finished looking round Zaff gave us all a leaflet to take home. Then we got back on the bus and went back home full of curry!

Press Release - OfSTED

Image Worsbrough Bank End Primary School press release from Barnsley Council on our OFSTED which took place in October 2008

WORSBROUGH Bank End Primary in Barnsley is a good school with an upbeat atmosphere where pupils are eager to learn, inspectors from the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) state in a newly-published report.

Inspected over two days earlier this term Worsbrough Bank End Primary is an improving school which provides good value for money, the inspectors say. The school at Underwood Avenue in Worsbrough Dale has 221 pupils aged three to 11 years. It has received Sportsmark and Silver Healthy Schools awards.

“The school was judged to be satisfactory in the previous inspection,” the report states. “Since then, a new Headteacher and senior leadership team have introduced improvements in leadership at all levels and in teaching and learning. Although not complete, these improvements are already making a positive difference to pupils’ progress.”

The quality of teaching and learning is good overall, the inspectors found. In the majority of classes, pupils make good progress because teaching is lively, interesting and well matched to their needs.

“The curriculum is good, providing pupils with a rich range of well-planned and interesting topics and after-school activities,” the report adds. Also praised by the inspection team as good overall are pupils’ personal development and wellbeing. Standards in English and mathematics are good.

Procedures at Worsbrough Bank End for identifying the needs of pupils with a learning difficulty or disability are “very effective”, Ofsted says, adding that teaching assistants make a strong contribution to the good progress of these pupils.

Pastoral care is a significant strength and every child is valued, the inspectors report. The high level of care by all staff contributes to an upbeat atmosphere and pupils’ eagerness to come to school to learn.

Ofsted highlights the “very strong leadership of headteacher  Miss MarionTapp which “encourages high levels of commitment and teamwork among all of the staff”. The inspectors add that Miss Tapp and the leadership team continuously scrutinize the work of the school to judge its impact on raising pupils’ achievement.

Responding to the inspectors’ finding, Miss Tapp said: I am very pleased with the outcome of our recent Ofsted Inspection and glad it recognized the hard work of all the staff. We are now in a good position to move forwards. I am very proud to be the Headteacher of Bank End Primary School

The governing body is well led, the report adds, stating: “Governors clearly understand the strengths and weaknesses of the school and they provide good support and challenge.”

Chair of Governors Mrs Jayne Goldthorpe commented: I am extremely proud that the continuing hard work and dedication of all staff involved at the school has been recognised by the Ofsted Inspectors when determining Bank End was a ‘good’ school.   Miss Tapp and all the staff support every child to achieve their maximum potential.

The inspection report also contains a number of recommended actions that will enable the school to improve further. These are to raise standards in English and mathematics, especially for high attainers; improve the consistency of good teaching across the school; and ensure marking provides more guidance to pupils on how to improve their work.

Newsletter October 2008 : Building Work

ImageOver the last two years we have replaced a lot of furniture and equipment inside the school. We are now turning our attention to the building.

The whole school has been measured up for new windows, doors and cladding and within the next few months all the windows in the library, year five and year six classrooms will be replaced as well as the back of the school hall. The other windows and doors will follow on in a phased programme.

The toilets in year one, year two and reception are going to be completely replaced after the October half term holiday.

We have also requested an estimate for a new and wider path around the front of the school to the Nursery.

The Local Authority allocates to each school a certain amount of money each year for building repairs and works. We have not had any money for a few years because it was used to create the new nursery building, the demolition of the old nursery building and the creation of the key stage one playground and ground improvements.

I would like to remind parents that the Academy is not being built using Local Authority funding but private enterprise funding so they have a lot more money to spend on buildings etc.
