Bankend HAS got talent..!

Here are the hilights from our brilliant end of term performance. Thanks to everyone who made it such a roaring success.

Changes Assembly

This was an assembly done by Charlotte from ‘Bounce Kids Club’ in Barnsley. Caharlotte did an interesting assembly on ‘changes’. The children learned about what changes may happen to them over the next few months and good ways to deal with them!

Report Letter

Dear Parents and Carers

We hope that you like reading your child/children’s reports and are pleased with the progress that they have made. We have included some resources to help you understand where your child/children are nationally.  Also in this pack is a copy of each child’s registration certificate.  We have included these rather than simply giving you a percentage of attendance so that you can see the days that have been taken off school this year.  We take attendance very seriously; we cannot do our job if we do not have your children in school.  Attendance that falls below our target of 95% is an issue and something that we will be talking to you about if this occurs.

We do all our focused reading and teaching of reading in the morning between 8.55 and 9.20, so if your child is regularly late for school, learning in this area will be affected.  Please do your best to ensure that your child/children are always in school on time, as reading is the key to unlocking the potential in all learning.

It was fantastic to see you in school last week and see you enjoying all the activities we shared with you.  Our Summer Fayre raised a grand total of £600 profit and this tidy sum will be added into the Bank End Buddies bank account so that the committee can continue to organise community events in the future.

Thank you so much for completing our questionnaires last week, we know from you that:

98% of you feel your child/children are safe and happy in school
98% of you are pleased with the progress your child/children make
95% of you feel that we work hard to solve problems
95% of you think we communicate well with you

We endeavour to work hard to look after this good reputation and really aim to reach out and improve for those that we have failed to meet.

For September we would ask that you make sure that you have a full school uniform for your children to return to us in which includes black footwear, black trousers/skirts/white or navy polo shirts and a navy sweatshirt/fleece or cardigan. Please also make sure that all children have a PE kit that is black and white only. Please send your child/children to school every Monday with their named PE kits.  The staff will collect them in and store them in a safe location.  They will be handed out again on Friday to be brought home for you to wash.  Children without a PE kit will not be able to take part in the lessons, so please be diligent with this matter and get into a good routine of fetching them every Monday.

We will be sending out a new homework pack on the first Monday back, which will include times tables, spellings, a reading book and a small amount of literacy and maths homework.  Homework will always go out on a Monday and should be returned on a Friday.  This way your child/children always get the weekends to relax.

We will be working hard to try to improve the school this next year.  Our four priorities are:

  1. Raise attainment and accelerate progress for all children
  2. Improve the curriculum so that teaching is always good and children are excited by learning
  3. Improve the EYFS so that the youngest children make speedy progress
  4. Improve leadership and management so that the school has a sustained capacity to improve

It is sure to be a busy year so I thank you in advance for your continued support.

I look forward to our full year together with great anticipation!

Letter to parents

Dear Parent or Carers,
Since joining the school on the 1st July I have been delighted to witness the friendliness of the community and the enthusiasm that children, staff and parents have for learning in Bank End.
In my assembly with the children yesterday I was discussing pupil voice and how important it is to ensure that the children feel valued and listened to within school. To that end there will be a School Council with representatives from all classes.
There will be pupils from year 5 and 6 pupils to represent Nursery, Reception and Year 1. I will be the staff lead and staff representative on the Council. Please discuss with your child if they wish to be a representative for their class, or, if they will be in year 5 or 6 in September, for Nursery/Reception or Year 1.
The children have been asked to prepare a short speech about why they would be a good representative to share with their class on Monday, the classes will then vote on who they want as their representatives.In assembly we discussed;

  • Being a good role model
  • Being able to listen and remember what is said
  • Being able to speak in front of groups
  • Being able to share opinions and ideas from the class, not just their own

In school for everything we do we have 3 drivers, and a School Council will support our school in continuing to move forward, and develop successful and happy learners.

School Driver

How having a school council develops our school and pupils

Ambition The School Council develops leader for the future, and gives the school insight into democracy and citizenship
Learning2learn The representatives will develop their thinking skills, co-operation skills, speaking and listening skills and their knowledge of the community.
Ownership The representatives will get the opportunity to represent their class mates in school decisions, the school in the community, and the community in Barnsley-wide events.

Being on school council is a really good opportunity for children; in return we ask for the children to be good attenders and to be committed to school council, because even though it is fun, there will also sometimes be extra work for the children to do.

Thank you for your support,

Jenny Bowers

Newsletter 11 July 2011

Dear Parents and Carers,

I wanted to write to you with final arrangements for these last two weeks in school and thank you for your time, support and welcome in these past few months.  We have had an incredible 6 months together.  I’m sure that you are aware of all the hard work that has been going on both in and out of the classroom.  All this work is to support your children in attaining to their own potential.  This work has already had a huge impact as we have some of the best progress and SATs results than the school has seen in 3 years.  This has been a huge team effort and I would like to thank the staff, families and children for their immense efforts-Together we really do achieve more!

Donations – Please bring your donations for the Summer Fayre to the school hall first thing on Wednesday or Thursday morning.  To make it a great event we need as many donations as possible.

The Performance - The shows start at 9.30am and 1.30pm- (yes I know I had said am before, well done those who spotted the mistake) on Wednesday and 9.30am on Thursday.  Please feel free to come in to the hall anytime from 9am to meet, chat and relax. Please accept my thanks for supporting the classes with costumes at such a late date, we have tried to keep all learning a priority and accept that we should have asked for your costumes sooner…this is a learn for us for next year.

The Summer Fayre-Friday 15th July 2pm -This event begins at 2pm for parents and carers.  The staff will bring out your children who can join you for the fun which will be stalls, barbeque and face painting on the KS2 playground and sports on the KS1 playground. A bell will ring at 2.55pm to get the children back to class to dismiss them to you as normal.  You will be free then to come back to the Fayre with your children or leave the grounds.

Y6 Celebration Event –Wednesday 20th July 6pm -The doors to school will be open from 6pm and all the staff are greatly looking forward to the Year 6 disco to celebrate the end of their primary career at Bank End.  Please note the Disco and Barbeque are for Year 6 children only.  As it is a normal school day it is expected that all Year 6 children will be present for their lessons.  If your child is ill and not present for school that day we would ask that they do not attend the Disco in the evening.

Classes for 2011-2012 -We have put much thought into supporting your children this year to accelerate their learning.  In order to continue with this excellent work we have tried to endeavour to support the children by keeping their present teacher with them, so that they can ‘hit the ground running’ in September.  Where we have employed new staff members we feel that we have made excellent appointments and are sure that you will be delighted with them also.

Year 1 – Miss Kathy Smith

Year 2 – Miss Lauren Wright Lead Teacher KS1

Year 3 – Mrs Ann Thorpe

Once again I would like to thank you for your support of the school.  I love Bank End and truly look forward to the coming year with great excitement.

Thank you for your continued support!

Bank End Summer Fayre

This week a letter has been sent home regarding our Sumer Fayre which takes place on the 15th of July. You can see details below or follow the link to read or print the letter in its original format

Summer Fayre Letter

Dear Parents, Carers and Friends

We have a very small, newly formed parents group that have been working tirelessly in school to set up fun events for children and families since the beginning of May.  One such event that we all feel passionate about is our up and coming Summer Fayre where we will be opening our doors for the afternoon of the 15th July and inviting you in to share some summer festivities and fun with us.

Below is a list of stalls that we will be running on that day.  Please could you donate to your child’s/children’s classes or any other class so that we can make sure that it is not only fun but fund raising for our children and school too?

EYFS/Y1- Tombola Stall-Please donate cans, bottles, toys, sweets…anything in good order

Y2/Y3- Second Hand Book and Toy Stall- Please help us by donating toys and books that your children may have grown out of

Y4-Biscuits and Cake Stall-the children will be baking for this stall but please help us by donating packets of biscuits and cakes

Y5-Treasure Map- A selection of prizes are needed for this game that will be made by the Y5s-so please donate sweets, chocolates or anything that would make a good gift

Y6-Face Paints-The children will be face painting, nail varnishing and even doing hair, please help them by donating nail varnish hair products etc.

We are desperately seeking second hand uniform to be sold on this afternoon also…if you have some that your child/children have no further use for please donate it for us to recycle.

There will be other attractions going on during the course of the afternoon including surprise fun activities for adults and children alike and a barbeque.  In order to achieve all this we would ask that you give a small amount of time to support the stalls for your child/children’s class.

ALL ITEMS FOR DONATION NEED TO BE BROUGHT TO THE SCHOOL HALL ON WEDNESDAY 13TH JULY, ANYTIME DURING THE DAY.

Many thanks for your continued support!

Newsletter June 23rd 2011

Important
Due to most teachers being involved in strike action on Thursday 30th June, the school will be closed to children on that day. We will be open as normal again on the Friday.

Early Years Foundation Stage
We always want to be really upfront and honest with you about how well your children are learning and so we wanted to share with you something that we have found to be truly supportive in developing early writers in school.
In the Reception Class there has been a huge improvement in writing skills especially, we have noticed, with the children whose parents and carers come in to write with them on a morning.  Because of this we feel we must really emphasise the importance of you arriving at school on time to spend 5 or 10 minutes engaging in the activities that the staff put out every morning.  Please talk to us if we can help you more in this area. Many thanks for your support in this matter!

PARENTS and CARERS
We are having a planning meeting for a Bank End Summer Fayre on Friday 24th June at 2.30pm at school.  If you would like to help us support the planning and organisation of a Fayre for parents and children this summer, please feel free to join in…all very welcome!

The Y6 celebration is to be held on Wednesday 20th July from 6pm… Thank you to Megan’s mum for contacting about times, it really helped us to think this through.

Mrs Siddons is arranging a trip to Cannon Hall and will be in touch ASAP

YEAR 6 PARENTS

Tomorrow there is a coffee morning for Y6 parents in the school staffroom. Two members of staff from the academy will be present and a representative will also be bringing the uniform for you to see and set up a payment plan for. I’m sure it will be really worthwhile so please try to come.

At 2.30pm Tim Dawson from Barnsley Academy is running a meeting in the hall for Y6 parents to support literacy and numeracy skills. This is a fantastic opportunity to see the support that is in place for core subjects in the Academy.

Children should be able to read like they can breathe

EYFS and KS1 parents…we are trying to organize a series of meetings to help parents and carers to
further understand how we teach letter and sounds, and thenhowthishelpschildrentolearntoreadfluently. If you would be interested in joining in these sessions please would you let your class teacher know as we need interest from at least 8 families before we can book the workshops?

Learning Update!

It is with delight that I share with you our up to date information on learning, progress and attainment. 80% of the children in school have made accelerated progress between January and May, with the average rate of progress in writing and Maths standing at 4 points, which is equivalent to a year and a term. So a fantastic effort has been put in by all the children, all staff and family members. Please continue to keep encouraging your children to do some reading and spellings at home in order to push a little more in the 6 weeks we have left in school up to summer.

Star

Dear Kelsey

You are the first person in school that I have chosen for a very special mention.  It takes a lot to impress me but you have managed it…well done! I have been impressed with you for a number of reasons that I am going to list- here are my top 5 below:

  1. Your behaviour is exemplary-you are a joy to have in school
  2. Your attitude to learning is phenomenal-you throw yourself into everything and I love that about you
  3. You take ownership of what is going on in your class and you share your excitement with everyone-thank you for including me by emailing me your thought
  4. The presentation of your work is beautiful and you deserve to feel so, so, so proud-your handwriting looks like a very neat adult’s writing.
  5. You are one of the most positive people I have ever met; you greet every day and every task with a smile.  Other people could learn a lot from you!

I hope that you feel proud Kelsey and that your brilliant attitude and behaviour is copied by other children in this school.  Thank you for making my job feel very worthwhile.

Remember to always be ambitious and reach for the stars because you deserve to do and be whoever you want to be.  Go for it Kelsey!

Good luck with your future
