Mindfulness

Year 6 have engaged in a workshop this week that has taught the children, through drama, about being mindful. This experience has come just at the right time for Year 6 as it has taught them basic strategies for how to deal with stress and other issues that can often affect our mood. The children delivered a brilliant performance to the rest of school. Here they are in action.

Transition to Secondary

Over the past three weeks, Year 6 have had peer mentoring sessions with student ambassadors from Barnsley Academy. The aim of these meetings has been to allow the children to ask questions about their transition to secondary school and also to build relationships with the academy students. The children have throughly enjoyed this experience and have expressed that it has been beneficial in preparing them for the future.

Our Hero…

Dear Wyatt,

I found it really easy to choose you as Class Hero this week. There are a number of reasons that you have been selected and these are just a few of them.

First of all, I have to mention your progress in reading. Your reading score has improved from 99- amber (in February) to 105 – green (in March).  This is outstanding progress Wyatt and it is down to your hard work and determination to succeed. You give 100% effort in all reading sessions – including the after school Boot Camp session where we all work together to improve reading skills. You have also improved in maths and GPS since February and you are now green in all three subjects! What an amazing achievement!

Secondly, I want to say that I have noticed a real maturity in you over the past few weeks. You have definitely stepped up to the mark in terms of preparing yourself well for SATs and I know that your learning means a great deal to you. You always work hard in class and you never fail to make us all so proud.

The icing on the cake this week has been your kindness and helpfulness towards others. The way that you go out of your way to make people have a better day is something that we could all learn from. You helped Mrs Thorpe in her assembly and she was so happy that you would be so kind as to do that for her. You are such a gorgeous person and we are incredibly lucky to have you at Bank End.

Love, Miss Smith

Year 6 SPRING into an afternoon of Art

This afternoon, Year 6 got creative to explore a range of Spring-inspired pieces of Art.  They chose their favourite style, explored why they liked it and recorded their opinions in their sketch books.  They then used a wide range of medium to try to re-create some of the shapes and colours that they liked.  Once they found a medium and style of working that worked for them, they began to plan their own piece of Art.  Eventually, they will have explored, designed and created their very own, unique pieces of Art that represent them as individuals.

Journalistic Writing

Our class novel, in Year 6, is ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar. Within the story, an incident occurs that is very exciting and dramatic. After hearing this part of the story, we decided to report on the incident and write a newspaper report.  Our writing has many journalistic features and even looks the part with the headline and layout.

Our Hero…

Dear Zuzanna,

When I heard that the Weekly Challenge was all about being motivated I instantly thought of YOU! You are by far, the MOST motivated person that I have ever met and your effort and enthusiasm is noticed by everyone in school.

You make every single day at school a fun one and it is an absolute pleasure to have you in class. You are so hard working and you do everything that you can to improve in your own learning – including doing extra homework. I was blown away by the effort that you put into the maths book that you made and to see all the data handling work inside made me feel so, so proud of you.

Since starting in Year 6, you have made so mu
ch progress. I know that, at first, you struggled with answering inference questions whilst reading. Over the past few months, you have really excelled in this area and I believe that your hard work, both in guided reading and at Boot Camp, have had a really positive impact on this.

The best piece of advice I can give you Zuzanna is to keep being YOU. You are amazing and I think that you have the potential to do anything that you want to in life. Not only are you a brilliant learner, you are also a fantastic role model and a really supportive person. I trust you entirely and you are responsible and sensible when you need to be. The rest of the time you are bubbly, fun and excitable and this is what we all love about you so much. I can’t wait to spend the rest of this year with you and watch you continue to succeed in everything that you do.

Love, Miss Smith

The Human Body

Year 6 have started a new topic in science – The Human Body. To begin this learning we started really simply. To test their prior knowledge, they drew around each other on the playground and worked together to decide where the vital organs are located within the body. They will develop their learning throughout this half term and we are very excited that we have a guest speaker, coming into school this week, to help us with this learning.
