Today in Year 1 we had a very special surprise.

A man called Andy came into our class and taught us how to use an iPad. We had to plug our earphones into it and turn it on. We then had to learn how to use an app called Junior Jam. It was so much fun!

We were composers for the morning and we made our own music. We had to choose which instruments we would like and then record them playing in a rhythm of our choice.

We really enjoyed using the iPads and we hope that we can use them again soon.

Here are some of the things that the children said;

“It was cool and fun with the iPads”.

“I liked using the iPad because I liked playing the keyboard. It was fun”.

“I liked playing the instruments and listening because it made me feel funny”.

Y1 Star of the Week

Dear Alyza,

It’s fantastic to say that you are star of the week in Year 1 this week. I bet that you are very proud to be stood up in front of our school listening to all the wonderful things that I have to say about you .

First of all I would like to say how fantatstic your writing is. Your writing this week was brilliant and I just had to let you share your hard work with Mrs Thorpe. She too was very proud.

Secondly I would like to mention what a fantastic artist you are. I can tell that you really enjoy art and your work is always very well thought through. The detail that you add to your work is outstanding and I always love to see the outcome when I have watched you plan and practice during art lessons.

I also want to comment on how polite and kind you are Alyza. You have a lovely group of friends in our class and I know that everyone enjoys having you in our team.

Finally it is important for me to say how much progress you have made so far in Year 1. The reason that you are working at such a high level is because you are always listening in lessons and you are always keen to move on to the next step. You listen to advice and work hard towards your targets. These attributes can only lead to success Alyza so keep it up.

Lots of Love From Miss Smith x x x

Year 1 this week…

In Year 1 this week we have been imagining that we have lived for a day in the ‘Dark, Dark House’. We have been doing lots of exciting activities such as:

* Making witch’s brew

* Doing the skeleton dance

* Decorating skeleton biscuits

* Reading scary stories

We have really enjoyed our day in the ‘Dark, Dark House and we hope that we can go again very soon.

Carefully calculated in Year 1…

This week in maths Year 1 have been calculating. They have been working out subtraction calculations. The calculations have been amounts of money and they have chosen their own methods for working them out.

Some of Year 1 have used number lines to count on. Some have used real pennies and some have used their fingers to count on.

Y1 Star of the Week

Dear Anya,

Congratulations Anya ! Well done for being chosen as Year 1’s star of the week. I am very proud of you and I know that you will be proud of yourself.

I have chosen you as star of the week because I think that you are a wonderful member of our class. You are very polite and friendly and I love to see your smiley face everyday.

You work very hard in all lessons and I would struggle to find the time to tell you just how great you are. Your writing has improved and I know that this is because you are trying really hard to sound out unfamiliar words so that your writing is clear and easy to read. This also helps you to read your work back to check that it makes sense.

Your art work is fantastic. When you draw you take your time to add details and you make sure that you use the correct colours when painting or colouring using pencils. Your creative work is outstanding and I can tell that you really love designing and creating.

I would just like to say one more ‘WELL DONE!’ I love having you in our class and I just know that you will continue to try your best.

Lots of Love From

In Year 1 we are learning how to write instructions.

Before we could begin to write instructions we firstly had to learn how to follow them.

We followed a set of instructions that would tell us how to make Big Skeleton’s favourite sandwich. We had to read lots of bossy words to help us to do this.

These are some of the bossy words that we read:

Cut, put, slice and spread.

We followed the instructions in order. The numbered steps helped us to do this.

We all made our own sandwich for Big Skeleton and we wrapped it up in tin foil and took it home.

Y1 Star of the week

Dear Chesney,

Congratulations on being our star in Year 1 this week. Mrs.Wood and I have both agreed that you should be our star and we are delighted to award you with this very special mention.

I have chosen you for lots of different reasons Chesney and I know that you won’t be surprised to hear any of the wonderful things I have to say about you.

You are extremely hard working and you always try your very best in everything that you do. Your writing has improved massively and I am amazed bythe amountof progress that you have made. The reason that you have made this excellent progress is that you listen all the time and you know your targets and work really hard on trying to achieve them.

You are a wonderful member of Year 1 Chesney and you are a delight to teach. You are extremely polite and friendly and you are a very popular member of our class.

I know that you will continue to work very hard Chesney and I look forward to spending the rest of the year with you in Year 1.

In the Dark, Dark House with Year 1

As scientists we will be using our investigative skills to explore materials and their properties. We will be using our senses to compare objects made from different materials and we will then be sorting them into categories. We will also be collecting attractive and unusual objects to make a materials display in our classroom.

As artists we will be looking closely at the patterns that can be found on the fur and feathers of nocturnal animals. We will then be recreating these patterns using a range of art materials such as pastels, water colours, charcoal and pencils.

As writers we will be learning about instructions. We will learn how to follow instructions and also how to write them. We will be instructions on:

  • How to make a skeleton’s favourite sandwich
  • How to make hedgehog food
  • How to make a clay lamp.
  • How to grow a cress seed.

Our role play area in our classroom has been transformed into a ‘Dark, Dark house.’ Within this area we have a range of tasks and activities to choose from. These activities include, writing tasks such as descriptive writing and labeling. Maths activities such as problem based activities, counting and number tasks, and comparing and ordering. As well as all this we also have thinking skills, activities and science activities.

Y1 have a great time at Christmas

We have had lots of fun in Year 1 on the final run up to Christmas. We have had a yummy Christmas dinner where we wore our Christmas hats that we had made.
We have also had a visit from Santa. We went to his wonderful grotto where we spoke to him and we even got a present from him. It was really exciting.
To top it all off we have even had some snow this week. We are looking forward to playing out in the snow and making a snowman.

Special Mention Y1

Dear Sherona,

Well done for being star of the week in year 1 this week. It has been a very exciting time in our class this week as we are on the run up to Christmas and I can tell that you are so excited and that you are really enjoying school.

I have chosen you as our star this week as I know that you are trying your absolute hardest in school. Mrs Wood has said that you are making so much progress in Letters and Sounds and you are sounding out and blending CVC words to help you to read.

You always have interesting news to share with our class and you are getting really good at thinking about full answers when we ask you questions.

You are very kind and polite and you have lots of lovely friends. I think that you are a wonderful member of our team Sherona and it is an absolute pleasure to have you as part of our class.

It is very pleasing to see and hear you counting out objects aloud in maths as this is helping you to get the answers correct. I think that you are also doing very well with forming your numbers.

I know that you will continue to try hard Sherona and I would just like to say that I am very proud of you.

Special Mention Y1

Dear Alisha,

Congratulations on being our star of the week in Year 1 Alisha. I am very pleased to award you with this very special mention. There are many reasons why you are our star of the week and these are just a few of them.

You have settled into year 1 fantastically and you have lots of friends both in our class and in our Key stage. You are very kind towards others and you always volunteer yourself to help others.

Your writing is fantastic. You have a wonderful imagination and your writing is extremely exciting and interesting to read. I love that you always attempt your writing target as it can be difficult to be told that your fantastic work could always be improved.

Your maths work is always clear and you can always tell me why you have solved a problem in a certain way. You are able to make decisions and choose your own resources in maths which is great as this can be tricky.

I can tell that you enjoy the challenge that Year 1 presents to you Alisha as you are always trying to improve in everything that you do.

Lots of love and best wishes

From Miss Smith x x x

Data Collection in Year 1 & 2

In Y1 and Y2, we have been collectig data to find out what the most popular Chritsmas present is.

We created a tally chart and then asked as many people as possible.

We then discussed which present was the most and least popular.

Throughout the week we are going to create pictograms and bar charts.

Y1 Special Mention

Dear Macey,

First of all I would like to say a very well done for being chosen as our star of the week in Year 1. You deserve this special mention for a number of reasons Macey and I will try to fit them all on this page.

Your writing has improved as you are using what you have learned in Letters and Sounds to help you to write words. I can hear you sounding out when you are writing and this tells me that you are concentrating and trying hard with your writing. You have also started to use finger spaces which make your writing so much easier to read.

You are always willing to share your ideas with the rest of the class and we love to hear what you have to say.

You work well as part of a team and this seems easy work for you Macey. I think that this is because you like to share ideas so that you can improve your own work.

You worked really well in Maths with the work on shape and I was pleased to see that you were working independently to count the faces and edges on the 3D shapes.

I know that you will continue to try hard Macey and I would just like to say that I am very proud of you.

Dear Year 1 Parents and Carers…

As you know our topic in Year 1 is ‘Dungeons and Dragons’. As part of our topic we are holding an enterprise day where we will try to earn as much money as we can for our class. We would be really grateful if you could help us.

Year 1 would like to invite you to our fantastic ‘Knights Challenge’. This will be held on Tuesday 22nd November and will start at 1 ‘o’ clock. The afternoon will involve parents/carers coming into school to take part in some creative activities with your children.

  These activities will include:

  • Making chocolate lollipops
  • Making bookmarks
  • Making crowns and helmets
  • Making necklaces

There will also be an opportunity for you to buy some things made by the children in Year 1.

Here’s a list of what you could by on the day:

  • Fairy buns – 50p
  • Photoframes – £1
  • Artwork – £? (a donation of whatever you think it is worth)

Feeling lucky? Join in with our competitions and see what you could win.

  • Quiz – Test your fairytale knowledge with our class quiz (questions thought of by our children)- 20p per quiz sheet.
  • Guess the amount – Guess the number of sweets in the jar. The closest guess wins the lot- 50p a guess.

We really hope that you can join us for this fun and exciting afternoon in our wonderful school. Children will need to come to school as normal in the morning so we can all set up for the afternoon. You will need to come into school via the Year 1 entrance at 1 o’clock. Parents/carers will need to pay £1 to come and join in the fun.

Collage in Y1

As part of our creative curriculum in Year 1 we have been making photo-frames and collage pictures. We can’t tell you too much about our photo-frames as it is a surprise. Our collage pictures are of dungeons, dragons, castles and princesses. They look fantastic. We all got very messy making these things but we had lots and lots of FUN!
