Spring Term 2 in Year 3

We hope that everyone has had a good break and are refreshed and ready for the second half of the spring term!

In literacy this half term we will be learning how to re-write adapt and develop narratives. We will be using the text ‘The Mousehole Cat’ to link to our topic of natural disasters.

In numeracy we will be learning secure written methods for multiplication and division, as well as looking at time and towards the end of the term fractions.

Our science topic will continue investigating and evaluating the properties of rocks and soil. The class trip to ‘Magna’ will help to support and reinforce our learning.

During our creative curriculum subjects we will be investigating, describing and evaluating natural flood disasters in Barnsley and comparing these with other countries who have suffered floods. We will use drama and discussion to understand how communities support each other when faced with challenges.

The art topics this half term will investigate how shapes and lines are used to create emotive images and we will be evaluating and recreating ‘Tsunami Grief’ by Tim Brinton. Whilst our design and technology topic will involve investigating, designing, creating and evaluating a storm shelter.

As you can see we have a busy half-term ahead and I would like to thank you for all the support given to the children, as always if you have any queries or questions please feel free to ask at the beginning and ending of the day.

Year 3 have been working hard during our assessment week!

As you can see from this week’s gallery our Math’s Day on Tuesday was lots of fun and the children were able to concentrate on the skills they had been learning during the first half of the spring term.

We had a great time dramatising the Vesuvius eruption and the devastation of the town of Pompeii this was then used to develop our writing for our Big Write on Wednesday.

Y3 rock and roll…

This week year 3 have been working on a numeracy challenge similar to ones seen on Countdown. The children have really enjoyed using numbers between 1-9 to create multiples of 10. This has seen the children using addition, subtraction and in some cases multiplication skills.

During literacy we have been writing persuasive letters, with an important letter being written to Mrs Thorpe during our Big Write!

The photographs this week show the children investigating how rocks are used to our environment. This is part our our Science investigation about Rocks and Soil.

It’s busy in Y3…

This week Year 3 as part of our Volcano topic have been writing an advert to persuade people to go on holiday to Sicily and visit Mount Etna. They have been learning about ‘Palindromes’ in mathematics and developing calculation skills with numberlines and partitioning.

During our creative time we have begun to look at shading and shape using pencils and chalks, this will develop their enquiry skills in art. They have been using geographical and historical enquiry skills to research different Volcanoes around the world. The ICT challenge has been focussing on internet research skills.

As you can see the children have been very busy!

Year 3 are ready to erupt!

In Y3 we have moved into our spring term topic of ‘Volcanoes’ with great enthusiasm the children will be very busy the activities planned.

We will base our literacy learning around ‘Persuasion’ and will be creating Adverts, writing arguments , newspaper reports and letters to learn how language can be used to persuade an audience. The children will be building on their existing sentence level work to meet their personal achievement targets. Discussing with your child any adverts you see or newspaper articles you read will help with our classroom discussions.

Our mathematics focus will be on calculations. We will begin learning a variety of written and mental methods of addition and subtraction. Moving on through the term the children will begin learning strategies for multiplication and division. The children will identify and recognise number patterns to help them solve number challenges. They will be encouraged to set personal and team challenges and any support you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Science will focus on materials and how they change reversibly and irreversibly. Next time you are making a cup of tea and adding sugar or when you are baking ask the children what has happened to the ingredients. This is a great way to help them think about material changes in the real world!

Our Geography lessons will be linked to literacy and mathematics by looking at the geography of different countries where a variety of Volcanoes are situated. They will learn about populations, landscapes and the weather in these countries.

During history the children will learn to create chronological timelines about the eruptions which have occurred from their team Volcano.

Our art lessons will focus on learning how to use pattern, texture, colour and shape through different media to recreate volcanic lava and rock patterns. Children will learn how to plan, research, design and create quality pieces of work.

Art and design lessons will concentrate on how we can learn to use recyclable and new materials to create a model volcano. Any plastic bottles, kitchen roll tubes or egg carton’s you no longer need will be put to great use!

As always I know you will be supporting the children on their learning journey. Feel free to pop in and see the work they are doing at the end of the day!

Y3 Christmas Cards

This week Year 3 have been designing and creating tessellation patterns for their Christmas Dinner hats, mats and Christmas cards. They have been using a variety of media including paint, pastels, chalks and coloured pencils to practice fine motor skills. They have been exploring and developing their ideas so that they can make choices about how to be successful in their activities.

As you can see our ‘Snow Den’ is getting lots of use! They children are using this to complete literacy and numeracy activities.

Gifts Topic in Y3

In Y3 we have moved into our Christmas topic of ‘Gifts’ with a bang this year and the children will be very busy with the activities planned.

We will base our literacy learning around ‘The Snowman’ by Raymond Briggs a lovely wintery story. The children really enjoyed watching the film and listening to the music on Thursday. This will be their inspiration to write their own narrative concentrating on using verbs and connectives to explore how the gift of friendship is shared within the story.

Our mathematics focus will be on 2D and 3D shape and learning how important they are in creating the world around them. The theme of shape will run through into our ‘Art and Design’ lessons where the children will develop their skills creating Christmas based Art work.

Science will continue looking at nutrition and how our traditional Christmas dinner provides a varied diet.

R.E will focus on how different cultures celebrate important festivals in their religious calendars’.

Our Geography lessons will include the use of ICT and researching how different people celebrate Christmas around the world. In History the children will create a timeline showing the history of St Nicholas and how he developed into our present day ‘Santa’!

The children are very excited about our ‘Snow Den’ and will be using this daily to develop their hand-writing, numeracy and thinking skills.

The children have a busy 2 weeks ahead and I know that you will be supporting them all the way. Feel free to pop in and see the work they are doing at the end of the day!

Y3 Enterprise…

Year 3 had their enterprise afternoon on Thursday 24th November. The children had been learning about Viking Culture and beliefs. We were very happy to see so many family members who came to see the children’s work and learn a little themselves about Viking society. The enterprise raised over £60 all of which will be put towards the class trip during the spring term!
