A journey to a by-gone age with Year 5

Heres what Y5 had to say:

“On 7th February our class, Y5, went on a trip to Haworth.  We travelled by coach in groups of five, and when we arrived we split into two groups.  Some children went down to the drama workshop and dressed up as Victorians to do a small play of Jane Eyre.  The other half went to the Bronte house museum to find out about the Bronte family, Emily, Charlotte and Anne”.

“We got to see Charlotte Bronte’s own bedroom!”

“The museum was full of really interesting things.”

“We had a picnic in the snow.  It was really fun!”

“Inside the museum were the rooms in which the Bronte family lived.  The only things in the house that were replicas were the beds.  Everything else was real!  We had a great day out!”

“The drama workshop was fun!”

Victorian art and design in Y5

In Y5 we have been looking at the wallpaper and textile designs of William Morris and trying to recreate them.  The results are very impressive!

Dear Aimee

I am delighted to choose you as our star of the week!

Over the last few weeks you have really impressed both Miss Guest and me with your sensible attitude and your fantastic learning behaviour.  You know what your targets are, you know what you need to do to achieve them, and you keep on trying even when you find it hard.   I have noticed an amazing improvement in the way you work collaboratively with others:  you listen carefully to other people’s opinions and you explain why you agree or disagree.

This new attitude has led to great improvements in your work.  You focus on your targets and listen carefully, and your writing and maths are improving constantly.  I am absolutely delighted with the progress you are making, and I know your family will be so proud of you.  Well done, Aimee!

Y4 Superstar…

Dear Div,

It is a real pleasure to teach you and I am delighted to choose you as the Year Four Star of the Week

Your work is always immaculate. It is clear that you apply careful focus to every task that you undertake. We started peer tutoring the Year Two children this week and I know that you will be an excellent role model for your tutee with the high standards of presentation that you maintain.

I am pleased too with the good progress that you are making. In every lesson you listen well and try hard to apply your learning. In Maths this week you quickly learned how to use partitioning to add and take two digit numbers. In Guided Reading you impressed your group by summarising the beginning, middle and end of the story they were reading. In our writing lessons this week you made sure that you used the persuasive connectives we have been focussing on. If you continue as you are doing, you will learn and grow loads every week!

Keep up the excellent work.

From Mrs. Dever

Y5 welcome Bob the Snow Leopard!

Y5 worked so hard on their badge-making enterprise last term that they raised enough money to adopt their very own snow leopard!

They have now received an adoption certificate thanking them for supporting the snow leopards of the sacred Himalayas, which are in serious danger of becoming extinct.  They will receive regular photographs and updates about the species, and they also have their very own snow leopard, which they have named Bob, living in their classroom!

Y5 investigate the past

Some of the children in Y5 have been using real sources to help them find out about Victorian life.

They have used a family bible dating from 1881 to find out about the members of a real Victorian family, the Gibsons.  A quilt made in 1885 helped them to find out about the life of the Gibsons’ little daughter Jenny.  It showed the games and pastimes she enjoyed, favourite family members and significant developments such as the first postage stamps and the penny-farthing bicycle.  The children also managed to make links between the family bible and the quilt.  This is what they said:   “Jenny Gibson’s quilt is made up of small embroidered squares.  We think it was done by Jenny and her mum.  On the quilt is a picture of someone called Aunt Charlotte.  We think that Aunt Charlotte gave the bible to Jenny’s dad, because the inscription in the front of it says To J H Gibson with the best wishes of his sister, C E Gibson.  We think C stands for Charlotte.  We think Jenny must have loved her Aunt Charlotte and that is why there is a picture of her on the quilt”.

The children are working really hard on their Victorian theme, and are especially excited about their forthcoming visit to the Bronte Parsonage Museum when they hope to find even more answers to their questions!

Dear Holly

I am delighted to choose you as Year 5’s superstar this week.

There are many reasons for choosing you.  Firstly, your attendance is fantastic!  You are at school every day, and that means that you are always learning.  You involve yourself in everything that is going on at school and make the most of all opportunities, and this is one reason why you are making such good progress in writing and maths.

You are always cheerful and smiling, and you have a really positive attitude to everything.  I am especially impressed by your responsible attitude to your role with the School Council.  You take your duties very seriously and make sure that class discussions are well organised and focused.  It’s great to have you in our community!

Congratulations, Holly – I am really proud of you, and you should be very proud of your achievements!  Well done!

Y5 have stepped back in time!

When we came back to school after the holidays we had a Victorian classroom with tables in rows, and girls and boys had to sit separately.  We did some Victorian handwriting and we learned that when Victorian children got an answer wrong they had to wear a dunce’s cap!

We know that Queen Victoria was only 18 when she became queen in 1837, and she died in 1901.  We have thought of lots of questions about the Victorians that we would like to answer about Victorian life, so we will be doing lots of research over the next few weeks.

Year Five Step Back in Time!

This term, Y5 are stepping back in time to the Victorian era.

As readers, we will be reading both fiction and non-fiction texts to find out what life was like for Victorians.  We will use the information we find in our reading to help us develop our writing skills and meet our targets, and we will use persuasive language to help us write letters, advertisements and reports.  As mathematicians, we will learn about measures, shape and space and find out what Victorian children did in their maths lessons.  We will use imperial measures to follow Victorian recipes.  As scientists, we will learn about the earth, moon and sun and how we get night and day and the seasons.

In history, we will use a range of sources to help us find out how the Victorians lived.  We will learn what school was like for Victorian children, as we as what their homes were like and how they compare with ours.  We will find out about important people and significant events. Our geography work will involve finding out about travel and holidays in Victorian times.  As artists, we will investigate Victorian art and look at the wallpaper and textile designs of William Morris.  We will use our findings to create our own designs.  In design technology, we will study Victorian needlework and make our own version of a Victorian patchwork quilt.

The children have already decided what they would like to find out about the Victorians, so we are looking forward to a busy and exciting term!

You always try your best in everything you do, and the excellent progress you are making in both English and maths is evidence of this.  You always know what your target is and what you need to do next, and you listen carefully to a

dvice and try to follow it.  Your confidence is growing and you are not afraid to try new things;  Miss Guest, Mrs Haigh and I

were so impressed with the beautiful solo that you sang at our class Christmas party.  Your manners and behaviour are exemplary, and you are definitely a great role model for the Y5 team.

Congratulations, Jasmine – I am really proud of you, and you should be very proud of your achievements!  Well done!

Y6 Special Mention

Dear Lisa,

It is with great pleasure that I have put you forward for the Special Mentions Assembly this Friday. Enjoy this exciting occasion!

Since the start of Year 6, you have always worked incredibly hard to prove to me that you are worthy of being a member of our class. You have volunteered and accepted the responsibility of being a school council member for the Reception class and I’ve heard that you are very good at helping the younger children to make mature decisions in the council meetings. Your study and dedication in class has continued to progress and you take all the advice from Mrs Thorpe and I, and always try to apply it to your work every week.

I really appreciate how you can always be trusted to do a task and I know that any job will be done to the best of your ability. At Robinwood, the leaders remarked that you were a natural-born leader, something a lot of people yearn to be. You aren’t always the one shouting the loudest, but when the need arises, you step forward with very sensible decisions and everyone listens. They all look up to you and I know you are a very worthy friend to anyone in Bank End!
Continue showing you have the ability to be a role model as this will help you to know where you are going in your learning life.

Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, said

A great person attracts great people and knows how to hold them together.’

Keep it up Lisa!

Best wishes, Mr Cooper.

A Victorian Christmas in Y5

Y5’s classroom has become a Victorian room, decorated for Christmas in Victorian fashion with holly, ivy and mistletoe, and with a Victorian fireplace complete with Christmas stockings.

Our Christmas theme is Journeys, so as historians we will be travelling back in time to discover the beginnings of some of the Christmas traditions of today.  As geographers, we will be making a journey round Europe to find out how Christmas is celebrated in different countries.  As readers and writers, we will study some of the great stories and poems about Christmas and write some ourselves!   As artists, we will be looking at some of the first Christmas cards ever sent, and trying out some designs of our own.  As mathematicians, we will be finding out how far Santa Claus has to travel to visit all the countries in Europe, and working out how much it will cost to buy Christmas dinner for our families.
