Y6 Special Mention

Dear Loma,

It is with great pleasure that I have put you forward for the Special Mentions Assembly this Friday. Enjoy this exciting occasion!

Since the start of the Spring term in Year 6 Loma, you have begun to make your mark in the classroom! I feel that your writing understanding is just clicking into lace as you have grasped our genre of Persuasive Texts and developed a voice for your own opinions, using words such as ‘therefore’ and ‘however’ to clearly state your view on school decisions. The letter that you wrote recently disagreeing with the going to bedtime at 7pm idea was by far the best piece of work I have seen from you in ages! If you had finished the letter, it would have been thoroughly magnificent!

This week, I hinted that you could be a candidate for Celebration Assembly if you managed to stay away from negative influences. You have proved to me that you definitely have it in you to do just that. You have chosen the correct positive attitude that will therefore encourage a positive learning behaviour! I have seen you working hard on the carpet and been impressed, so keep it up!

Let’s see you in the good books from now on, Loma, so you can remember the rest of Year 6 as the positive experience it is! Remember: All things are difficult before they are easy.

Best wishes,

Mr Cooper.

Dear Libby,

It is with great pleasure that I have put you forward for the Special Mentions Assembly this Friday. Enjoy this exciting occasion!

Since the start of Year 6 Libby, you have always stood out as an extremely cheerful and welcoming member of the class! Your smile lights up the classroom (especially on these dark, wintry days) and it is a pleasure to have you in my lessons, soaking up all my teaching. You always have your hand up in discussions and have many an enquiring question ready when I ask.

In a morning, it is always a pleasure to open the mobile’s door to you as you deliver the fruit to us as you are a very polite and trustworthy person. Year 6 is lucky to have you as an ambassador of impeccable manners! Other members of staff have remarked how good your manners are and you always volunteer your assistance whenever it is needed by anyone. Bank End needs ‘always’ children and you are a good advertisement for such a quality!

You always know how to behave when sat in lessons and you are trying very hard to use all the information given to you by Mrs Haigh, Ms Beecher and myself so keep it up and push yourself as hard as you can to aim for the highest heights.

Keep it up with the positivity, Libby and remember: If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!

Best wishes,

Mr Cooper.

It’s cold out there…

Y6 have been thinking what life must have been like for Captain Scott during his ill-fated trek to the South Pole this week, as part of our Creative Curriculum. We combined this with some cold weather poses to use as part of our forthcoming art exhibition (class portraits linked to our topic on Extreme Environments. We surmised what Captain Scott might have looked like what we could look like during a wintry storm (imagine the girl’s hair being blown in a snowstorm)! There were quite a few model poses struck thanks to a strategically placed scarf and the aid of a hairdryer! More to follow…

Dear Bradley,

It is with great pleasure that I have put you forward for the Special Mentions Assembly this Friday. Enjoy this exciting occasion!

How could I have missed you out of this fantastic event? Since the start of Year 6 and especially since December, you have pushed yourself so hard to achieve in all lessons! I have had to work extra hard to challenge you in our curricular subjects as you are like a sponge; you soak up any knowledge I can provide and retain it, endeavouring to use it in your work.

I would like to say that you are the most pulchritudinous member of our class, but on researching the actual meaning of the word, I don’t think it is suitable! You are, however, a very trustworthy and sensible member of Year 6 and I know that all your classmates look up to you and really enjoy competing with you to aim for the highest goals ever.

You have totally taken ownership of your work and last week’s Level 5a for writing was a fantastic result as I’ve never taught anyone who achieved so highly this early in the school year.

Your positive attitude in class, Bradley, is infectious and I know I can trust you to think and give me your best contributions. You are always very considerate of everybody’s feelings and consequently, this makes you a good Year 6 role model! Don’t be pusillanimous and keep it up!

Best wishes, Mr Cooper.

Y6 Special Mention

Dear Kenan,

It is with great pleasure that I have put you forward for the Special Mentions Assembly this Friday. Enjoy this exciting occasion!

Since December, you have come to my attention in the positive way that you walk around school and conduct yourself in class. You have taken ownership of all the work I have taught you and are clearly giving me your best effort, especially in your writing!

Your positive attitude in class, Kenan, is like a twinkling jewel and I know I can trust you to think and give me your best contributions. You are always very considerate of everybody’s feelings and consequently, this is reflected in your writing, especially sympathising with Helen Skelton in our recent English lessons.

Sometimes you are a quiet boy in class but you are definitely someone to look up to, which makes you a role model, as your position on the school council confirms. Keep it up, Kenan!

I know your family are very impressed with your recent gymnastics achievements and I am equally amazed with how you manage to fit it all in and show such professional integrity towards your classwork at the same time! I am always so nervous when I compete, yet you seem so relaxed! Ensure you maintain this level of working and aim as high as you can Kenan, and you will taste success in the tough months to come!

Remember: ‘Commitment leads to action. Action brings your dream closer.’

Best wishes, Mr Cooper.

This term, Y6 are looking at Extreme Environments,

especially the polar regions of Antarctica and the Arctic!

As Geographers, we will use programs such as Google Earth to examine where the Polar Regions are in relation to Bank End Primary School and our homes. We will be comparing our environment with that of the Polar Regions and using map skills to plot routes that have been explored through the years.

By watching excerpts from the recent ‘Frozen Planet’ natural world documentary series, we will look at some of the animals that live in these hostile areas and seek to understand their plight in an environment threatened by global warming.

We will be using ICT to create powerpoint presentations of aspects of the Polar Regions, such as animals found there and researching aspects of climate change from the Internet.

As Writers, we will apply our genre of persuasive texts to design articles and leaflets and represent information to highlight the plight of animals and people trying to survive in the rapidly melting Polar Regions.

As Historians, we will be researching Captain Scott’s fateful race to conquer South Pole a hundred years ago, as well as comparing this voyage with the successful expedition of Roald Amundsen.

As enterprising people we will be working together as a class to research and design clothing that could enable us to survive in the extreme conditions; from the Polar Regions to the scorching temperatures of the desert. We will attempt to persuade a panel of judges (like on Dragons’ Den) that our products are the best for survival so that we can invest funds to create suitable textiles and fabrics.

As Artists, we will use paints to recreate some of the landscape features of the extreme environments that we have studied, as well as the animals that live in them.

As Helen Skelton (of Blue Peter fame) is currently crossing Antarctica for Sport Relief 2012, we will use our community skills to reflect and evaluate how she might be feeling during her expedition. This will promote our thinking skills and help us to speak and listen as a team.

We can’t wait to share all of our knowledge with you so keep checking the Y6 page on this website to follow our exciting journey!

Dear Lisa,

It is with great pleasure that I have put you forward for the Special Mentions Assembly this Friday. Enjoy this exciting occasion!

Since the start of Year 6, you have always worked incredibly hard to prove to me that you are worthy of being a member of our class. You have volunteered and accepted the responsibility of being a school council member for the Reception class and I’ve heard that you are very good at helping the younger children to make mature decisions in the council meetings. Your study and dedication in class has continued to progress and you take all the advice from Mrs Thorpe and I, and always try to apply it to your work every week.

I really appreciate how you can always be trusted to do a task and I know that any job will be done to the best of your ability. At Robinwood, the leaders remarked that you were a natural-born leader, something a lot of people yearn to be. You aren’t always the one shouting the loudest, but when the need arises, you step forward with very sensible decisions and everyone listens. They all look up to you and I know you are a very worthy friend to anyone in Bank End!
Continue showing you have the ability to be a role model as this will help you to know where you are going in your learning life.

Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, said

A great person attracts great people and knows how to hold them together.’

Keep it up Lisa!

Best wishes, Mr Cooper.

Dear Courtney,

It is with great pleasure that I have put you forward for the Special Mentions Assembly this Friday. Enjoy this exciting occasion!

I am very proud to have you on our team in Year 6 as lots of members of staff have noticed how hard you are working these days. Your work effort has really picked up this term and you are definitely trying to listen to all the advice we are giving you and acting upon it. At Robinwood, the instructors remarked how polite and ready you were even when you were faced with challenges that took you right out of your comfort zone! You are always ready to tackle a puzzle and you always have an answer for me when we have discussions on the carpet, especially when thunking!

You are also an always child and every class, family and school needs the always children to show the others how it is done, to lead by example. In class you are using your will and determination (developed in karate) to show you are dedicated to improve your learning behaviour and you can be trusted to complete any task or errand I set you on. Keep this up and it will be like second nature.

You are great to teach and your sense of humour is developing. I hope your
good influence also enables everyone to succeed around you!
Martin Luther King, the famous American political rights speaker, said,

The time is always right to do what is right.
Keep it up Courtney!

Best wishes, Mr Cooper.

Y6 Christmas

In Y6 our Christmas topic is called ‘Journeys’ and we are focusing on the celebration of Christmas in different countries and how we can get to these places. As geographers we will be using our navigational skills to find where Santa has to travel.

As writers we will be using the poem ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas’ to write our own modern day versions.

As mathematicians we will be exploring measures and the equivalents, as well as timetables that someone (possibly in a red coat) would have to use to get to his destination (in our sleigh in the classroom)!

As scientists we will be learning about light and shadows plus the properties of light and materials.

As historians we will be learning about the Christmas traditions through history.

As designers and technologists and artists we will be creating Christmas party hats, calendars and place mats.

Dear Kaitlin,

It is with great pleasure that I have put you forward for the Special Mentions Assembly this Friday. Enjoy this exciting occasion!

It has been noticed by several members of staff, including myself, that you have recently started to turn into one of those ‘always children’. You have begun to take a hold of your learning and shown that you are gradually getting to know what you want from your education at Bank End – you always have your hand up when I ask questions. Last week at Robinwood, the instructors were really impressed as you were always ready to face a challenge and you always encouraged others to have a go at the activity. Ms Nogowczyk remarked how you were always helping others to do their best and even though you were afraid of some of the tasks, you always threw yourself into them.

Your study and dedication in class have also begun to attract my attention and you now need to apply your always rule to your work so that it becomes second nature.

You are great to teach and your sense of humour is developing wonderfully. I hope your good influence enables everyone to succeed around you, it’s amazing how Porsche table is always so clean and tidy!

Abraham Lincoln, the famous American president, said,

Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.

Keep it up Kaitlin (always)!

Best wishes, Mr Cooper.

Y6 Enterprise

On Tuesday, Y6, Mr Cooper, Ms Austin and Miss Anwar held their Enterprise Day in the school hall.

A big thank you to all those parents who came along and assisted us with the ‘Design an Air Raid Shelter Challenge’, played ‘Spot The German’, bought our tastefully decorated bookmarks and had a go at our brain-busting World War Two quiz!

The winning shelter was constructed by Imogen and her mum plus Morgan and the quiz was won by Kaitlin and her parents.

A prize for an alliterative team name was also won by Courtney. £25 was raised for Y6’s future rewards, so thanks again for all your hard work and money!

Robinwood – hot off the press!!

Y6 (plus Mr Cooper, Mrs Dickson and Ms Nogowczyk) had a wonderful three days at Robinwood, Todmorden this weekend, tackling challenges such as Night Line, the Piranha Pool, Trapeze, Climbing Wall, Zip Wire, Quest and many more.

Although the weather gave us the delights of wind, rain and even sleet, we battled through and returned home Sunday afternoon!

Thanks to everyone for their courage, teamwork and senses of humour!

Fit for Football day in Year 5 and 6

On Monday, Y5 and Y6 had a Fit for Football day.  Three sports coaches from Barnsley FC came to do some activities with us.

One of the activities was anti-smoking and Kieran the coach explained what smoking can do to you.  The second activity was health eating, and we learned which foods were good and bad for you.  Finally we did physical exercise.  We played lots of games like scarecrow tigs.

The day was finally over and we all enjoyed it!  I hope we can do it again!

Dear Morgan,

It is with great pleasure that I have put you forward for the Special Mentions Assembly this Friday. Enjoy this exciting occasion!

You have really put the work in this week and tried very hard to show how much you want to aim for that elusive level 5 in writing! If you take onboard what Mrs Thorpe and I have said about how to improve your targets, you will be breaking into unchartered territory very, very soon. If you focus your energies into getting to school as many times as possible, you and I will see the benefit as your previous lower level attempts will become a thing of the past!

I really enjoy the way you put your hand up and try to answer every question in my lessons with such higher-level vocabulary; it is a mark of your intellect and your integrity. You obviously have a high regard for learning and that will enable other members of the class to learn from your good example.

You are definitely making the correct choice and showing me you will stop at nothing to choose the correct type of learning behaviour.

So Morgan, lead by example so others may follow!

Keep it up!

Best wishes, Mr Cooper.

Dear Callum,

It is with great pleasure that I have put you forward for the Special Mentions Assembly this Friday. Enjoy this exciting occasion!

This week, you have tried incredibly hard in class and been very successful! Last Friday, you completed your letter to thank Jack Thorpe for coming to see us and this week you have tried very hard in your other English work, especially with Miss Bowers.

This week, we have been working on angles in Maths and you have attempted and mastered recognising and calculating acute angles, obtuse and right angles. You have even demonstrated how to use a protractor to measure these angles then used the IWB protractor in front of the class! I was very impressed that you were brave enough to do this as I know how difficult it can be to get up in front of everyone in the class!

You have really put the work in this week and tried very hard to improve your working behaviour, which is a major achievement as you have also moved house!  Both Miss Austin and I have noticed your positive attitude to work and hope that this continues through the rest of the year. If this does happen you will be heading for role-model material!

So Callum, keep working and getting a good angle on learning!

Keep it up Callum!

Best wishes, Mr Cooper.
